BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE APPROBATION EXAM

WHO IS THE APPROBATION EXAM DESIGNED FOR? WHO HAVE TO PASS THE APPROBATION EXAM?

Physicians, dentists and pharmacists who as foreign nationals have obtained medical qualification outside the European Union and wish to practice their profession in the Czech Republic or the European Union must pass the approbation exam. Knowledge of the Czech language is one of the requirements for the successful passing of the approbation exam.

THE EXAM APPLICATION

The Application Form (The recognition of qualifications in accordance with § 34 of Law no. 95/2004 Coll.) can be found for free download (IPVZ web site the czech version).

The application, including all documents can be sent via mail to the Ministry of Health (Palacky Square 4, Prague 2, 128 01) or deliver it in person to the mailroom of the Ministry of Health at the same address.

THE APPLICATION DOCUMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • A certified copy (not the original) of translation of the document to proof eligibility for the medical profession – diploma (translation must be made by an interpreter registered in the register of experts and interpreters Czech Republic)
  • A certified copy of the certificate of recognition of university education (i.e. Validation by Act no. 111/1998 Coll., on universities, as amended).   • The job medical certificate - medical certificate is issued on the request of the applicant. No more than three months validity at the time of submission.
  • The proof of integrity - an extract from the Criminal Records. No more than three months validity at the time of submission.
  • A copy of the identity document (not verified)
  • A certified copy of marriage certificate or evidence of surname change (if the applicant has changed name)
  • 2 000, - CZK an administrative fee per application

All documents must be officially verified and translated into the Czech language, except for a copy of the identity document. If the original of the document is supported by the application, the Act No. 500/2004 Coll. It is part of the documentation and it is not possible to reverse it.

SPECIFIC PARTS OF APPROBATION Exam

The approbation exam consists of 3 parts. Content and scope corresponds to an accredited master's degree programs at the universities in the Czech Republic.

1. The written part 

The first part of the exam are computer tests, that are verifying  a/ expertise knowledge and b/ knowledge of the Czech health system and the Czech legal system in relation to health care in the Czech Republic. Both tests can be done only in the Czech language.
The minimum percentage of each part of the exam is 70%.

2. The medical practice

Six months of medical training within the weekly working time mostly in an employment relationship or another contractual relationship under professional supervision at accredited healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic. Completion of previous parts, including practical performance is a requirement for the realization of the final part of the exam.

 Within the medical practice, a candidate has to complete 5 case reports and one of them will be defend during the final part of the exam.

3. The oral part

An oral exam for doctors consists of Paediatrics, Surgery, Internal medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics to verify an ability to communicate in the Czech language and prove a medical expertise.

An oral exam for dentists consists of Paediatric Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Endodontics and Periodontistry.

An oral exam for pharmacist constists of Social Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Drug control, Pharmaceutical technology and Pharmacology.

WHAT FOLLOWS PASSING APPROBATION EXAM?

The Ministry of Health will send applicants the record on passing the exam. Based on this document, physician, dentists and pharmacists can practice the medical profession in any EU Member State. They can apply for any of the existing fields of postgraduate education.

VISA REQUIREMENTS AND EMPLOYMENT CARD

For the practical part of the exam is recommended to be a holder of the visa with the stay purpose code in the Czech Republic. This will allow the applicant to enter into an employment - or other contractual relationship as a physician, a dentist or a pharmacist.

1st attempt: 3 000, - CZK 2nd attempt: 4 000, - CZK 3th and any subsequent attempt: 6 000, - CZK

The third part of the exam

1st attempt: 4 000, - CZK
2nd attempt: 6 000, - CZK
3th and any subsequent attempt: 9 000, - CZK

PREPARATORY COURSES BEFORE THE APPROBATION EXAM

Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education /IPVZ/ organizes preparatory courses twice a year before the approbation exam.
Knowledge of the Czech language is one of the requirements for the successful passing of the approbation exam. Please note that all courses for the approbation exam are in the Czech language. An interpreter is not allowed.
