Basic information about the approbation exam

Who is the approbation exam designed for? Who have to pass the approbation exam?

Physicians, dentists and pharmacists who as foreign nationals have obtained medical qualification outside the European Union and wish to practice their profession in the Czech Republic or the European Union must pass the approbation exam. Knowledge of the Czech language is one of the requirements for the successful passing of the approbation exam.

THE EXAM APPLICATION

Deadline for approbation exam application is twice a year - February 28 (for the spring semester) and August 28 (for the fall semester).

The application, including all documents can be sent via mail to the Ministry of Health (Palacky Square 4, Prague 2, 128 01) or deliver it in person to the mailroom of the Ministry to the same address.

The application documents and requirements

  • A certified copy (not the original) of translation of the document to proof eligibility for the medical profession – diploma ( (translation must be made by an interpreter registered in the register of experts and interpreters Czech Republic)
  • A certified copy of the certificate of recognition of university education (i.e. Validation by Act no. 111/1998 Coll., on universities, as amended).   • The job medical certificate - medical certificate is issued on the request of the applicant. No more than three months validity at the time of submission.
  • The proof of integrity - an extract from the Criminal Records. No more than three months validity at the time of submission.
  • A copy of the identity document (not verified)
  • A certified copy of marriage certificate or evidence of surname change (if the applicant has changed name)
  • 2 000, - CZK an administrative fee

All documents must be officially verified and translated into the Czech language, except for a copy of the identity document. If the original of the document is supported by the application, the Act No. 500/2004 Coll. It is part of the documentation and it is not possible to reverse it.

 

An administrative fee in the amount of 2 000,- CZK can be paid by: 
  • 1. A stamp (available at Czech post offices)
  • 2. A bank transfer to the Ministry of Health:

Bank charges relating to the payment of an administrative fee is paid by the applicant. If the sent amount is less than the amount of the fee, the applicant will be asked to pay the remaining amount.

Specific parts of approbation test

The approbation exam consists of 4 parts. Content and scope corresponds to an accredited master's degree programs at the universities in the Czech Republic.

Each successfully passed part of the approbation exam is valid for 24 months.

1. The first part 

The first part of the exam is a computer test, which is verifying expertise knowledge. The test can be done only in Czech language. The minimum percentage of the first part of the exam is 70%. The result will be announced after completion.

2. The second part 

The second part of the exam is a computer test, which is verifying knowledge of the Czech health system and the Czech legal system in relation to health care in the Czech Republic.

The test can be done only in Czech language. The minimum percentage of the second part of the exam is 70%. The result will be announced after completion.

The both test are performed in one day only. The exam term (written or oral part of exam) will be announced to each candidate via invitations. The invitation will be sent by registered post to the contact address given by the applicant. Successful completion of previous two written tests is a requirement for the realization of the third part of the exam.

3. The third part

The third part requires the practical performance of relevant medical profession under professional supervision at any healthcare facilities in Czech Republic. Performance takes 5 months within the weekly working time mostly in an employment relationship or another contractual relationship. Successful completion of previous parts, including practical performance is a requirement for the realization of the fourth part of the exam.

Before taking on practical part is the duty of every physician, dentist and pharmacist to register with the relevant professional chamber.

During practice, the candidate has to complete 5 case studies. Examiners will select one of the case studies with candidate during the oral examination will defend. Examples of case studies are posted on the website of IPVZ and Ministry of Health.

After finishing the practical part a candidate will receive a certificate of graduation practice (see the confirmation requests below).

Confirmation is on the letterhead of the medical facility where the practice took place.

Confirmation includes: 

  • The name and surname of the exam candidate
  • The exact date of the completed practice (from - to, date, month, year)
  • The department/facility, where the practice was carried out
  • Spectrum of activities and performances that the candidate performed under
  • The supervision of supervisor
  • Evaluation of the activities and achievements done by supervisor
  • Evaluation of the treatment of patients, other staff and the profession
  • General assessment of the candidate's experience

Name, title, function, specialized qualification of supervisor, signature and stamp of medical facility

Note: In the case that the practice took place at various locations, certificate of the above will be presented to the supervisor of each department. The confirmed time of the practice must be 5 months in total.

During practice, the candidate has to complete 5 case studies. Examiners will select one of the case studies with candidate during the oral examination will defend.

4. The fourth part

The final part is an oral exam, which is verifying the expertise and ability to express oneself in the Czech language. Questions about this part of the exam are posted on the website of IPVZ and Ministry of Health.

Important information:

If the candidate fails to take part in the practical part after the successful completion of the two written tests within two months from the date of delivery of the decision on the practical part, he must report this fact to the Ministry of Health as soon as possible.

All professional experience gained in the Czech Republic prior to the recognition of professional competence (successful passing of the entire approval test) can not subsequently be included in the specialized training.

If the applicant can not attend any part of the approval test (written tests, practical part, oral part), he / she must send a written apology to the Ministry of Health (the apology form can be found below on this page in Downloads). The apology must be sent as soon as you find out that you can not take part in the exam.

Apology sent by email will not be accepted. Apologies can be brought personally or sent to the address of the Ministry of Health, Palackého náměstí 4, 120 00 Praha 2, to the hands of Tereza Krafková. A fully completed apology form must be signed by hand. An incorrect, incomplete or unreadable form will not be accepted and the apology will not be accepted.

If the applicant asks for a new decision on the practical part, he / she can only ask for this in writing. Requests for a new decision to be sent by e-mail will not be accepted. Requirements for a new decision must at least include the full name of the applicant, date of birth, address of permanent residence, contact address, justification of why a new decision requires a copy of the employment contract, a copy of the employee's card, the Ministry of the Interior's statement on the issue of the employee's card or the relevant consulate Visa and signature not allocated. Applications can be sent personally or sent to: Ministry of Health, Palackého náměstí 4, 120 00 Praha 2.

Anyone who has apologized from the written or oral part will be given a decision to suspend the administrative procedure for one year. At this time of year, the applicant must apply in writing for one of the parts of the examination. At the end of this period, the applicant will be given a decision to stop the administrative procedure.

All applicants who have apologized for attendance at any part of the Approbation Exam and will want to pass the appropriate part of the Approbation Examination in the given semester must file an application for the relevant part. Candidates who have successfully passed a written part, who have passed the practical part and want to past the oral part, must sent an application (See Downloads below - Written or oral application to apologize or do practice).

An applicant who has failed in any of the parts of the approval test must file a new application for the repetition of this part, a 2,000 CZK collection, a valid medical proof and a copy of the passport.
The practical part can not be performed for more than five months in accordance with valid legislation. Upon completion of the practical part, the applicant may perform the medical profession exclusively in a health care facility which has been accredited by the Ministry of Health for the purpose of carrying out specialized training in the relevant field.

An applicant who has failed in any of the parts of the Approved Examination may apply for a new qualification and approval test only after receiving a Non-Recognition Decision from the Ministry of Health. Otherwise, this request will be suspended due to an obstacle to proceedings under Section 66 E) of Act No. 500/2004 Coll., The Administrative Code.

What follows passing approbation exam?

The Ministry of Health will send applicants the record on passing the exam. Based on this document, physician, dentists and pharmacists can practice the medical profession in any EU Member State. They can apply for any of the existing fields of postgraduate education.

VISA REQUIREMENTS AND EMPLOYMENT CARD

For the practical part of exam is recommended to be a holder of a visa with the stay purpose code in the Czech Republic. This will allow the applicant to enter into an employment - or other contractual relationship as a physician, dentist or pharmacist.

Inspection of this visa, including legal liability for its closure is under of authority of medical facility. To practice, the applicant must request a work permit at the relevant labor office.
